Something Special

At Big Friend-Little Friend, we honor each of our mentors just as much as the next. They are each doing something special and outstanding – they are volunteering their time to help make an impact in the life of a young person. However, there is something pretty special going on right now, and we want to make sure you know about it.

The Mount Marty College Women’s basketball team has had an amazing season. The number 12 ranked Lancers finished the regular season with 22 wins and 10 losses – that alone is a pretty great season! They didn’t stop there though: The Lancers earned a spot at the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Sioux City, IA. It’s obvious that these ladies are good at basketball – no doubt there.

They don’t just focus on sports, though. The Lancers will finish with a team grade point average (GPA) that is top 10 in the entire NAIA Division II, with potential to finish in first place, which they did in 2014. They know how to “hit the books”, that’s for sure.

The way this ties into Big Friend-Little Friend is that four key players for Mount Marty volunteer with Big Friend-Little Friend. On top of playing excellent basketball, taking collegiate coursework very seriously and holding down jobs at various Yankton businesses, these four ladies take time out of each week to impact the life of a young person. This includes Cassidy Gebhart, Alex Kneeland, Raquel Sutera, and Logan Wagner.

Gebhart, Kneeland and Sutera all volunteer as Big Friends. Gebhart and Sutera have been with their Little Friend for over a year, and Kneeland was matched in October of 2015. Logan Wagner volunteers in our one-on-one tutoring program and began several weeks ago. Unfortunately, we don’t have any pictures of her yet!

These four young women continue to show outstanding motivation and character, which are huge parts of what we teach at Big Friend-Little Friend. They are each excellent role models, and we couldn’t be more proud of what they have achieved this year, both on and off the court. This isn’t something that happens every year, so we wanted to make sure we congratulate them and cheer them on as they fight towards the championship!

Good luck Lancers! Thank you for being Heroes to Yankton’s youth.

The Lancers play Purdue Calumet at 7:00 PM on Thursday, March 10th. The games are held at Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, IA. To follow their progress, click here

  1. What a wonderful thing you young ladies have done. These young people will never forget the time you made and spent with them. I wish you all the very best in your lives.
Have fun Thursday in your game and go LANCERS. You are winners in my book.
